Our study focuses on the different ways that parents and other caregivers may talk with their kids about difficult topics like race. We hope to learn more about the conversations that you have with your kids in order to create better resources for parents everywhere!

What does participation involve?

One-on-one interviews with parents and kids will consist of four main parts:

  1. Consent (15 minutes): We will go over study expectations and your rights as a participant

  2. Parent interview (20 minutes): We will discuss how you currently approach different topics with your children such as race

  3. Child interview (15 minutes): We will ask your child what they understand about these topics

  4. Activity (10 minutes): You will watch a short video with your child and be asked to talk about it together for a few minutes

In total, this will take 60 minutes, but we ask you to set aside an hour-and-a-half in case the interview runs long. All interviews will be conducted online through a video call - this way parents and kids can complete these interviews from the comfort of their own homes.

Who is eligible to participate?

To participate in this study you must have been invited to participate, be a parent or caregiver who is 18 years or older, and are currently raising a K-2nd grade child.
